A new charity art project, Bag Full of Life, is now on display at the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead as part of a free exhibition.

The Bag Full of Life has been created by Oasis Community Housing’s Experts by Experience (EBE) group, people who have previously or who are still receiving support from Oasis Community Housing for homelessness, domestic abuse and other traumas.

The group wanted to capture the stark reality of one bag containing all of your worldly possessions. But also the positivity of new beginnings, transformation and excitement of what the future could bring.

The project was developed in collaboration with Shipley Art Gallery and Crafting Hope CIC, who led a series of felt-making, quilting and sewing workshops.

Ashley, one of the EBE group, explains: “Being asked to take part in a textile art project was a little bit daunting at first, especially as I can’t even sew a button on straight!

“As a group though, what we lacked in skill we definitely made up for in enthusiasm and creativity.

“We all found the sessions therapeutic, engaging and we learnt a new skill.

“Hopefully it will inspire others to be creative and also, more importantly, remember that tomorrow is a new day.”

Felt panels of the seaside, shells, a chick and other images of renewal and hope adorn the white quilted tote bag. The work was created by Ashley, Linda, Maciek, Melanie and Cal from Oasis Community Housing – with guidance from Faye and Angelika of Crafting Hope CIC. The project was generously supported by a donation from North East Modern Quilters.
